Quick Answer: What Are Transmutations?
Transmutations are Valor Mortis's spell system โ supernatural powers channeled through the corruption in your veins, with the flamethrower as the verified flagship (the Flame Feast achievement is built entirely around it). They run on their own upgrade path โ Transmutation Artifex asks you to max one โ and the Arsenal Absolute achievement counts them into the full collection. Think of them as a third hand the enemy roster cannot fully predict.
The Flamethrower: Your First and Possibly Only Spell
One use, four enemies burning โ that is the Flame Feast bar, and it describes the tool exactly: a burst of area denial that turns packs into Chip damage and interrupts the rhythm of everything that does not like fire. Beast packs, assembled horrors and arena crowds are its natural prey. As a single-target boss tool it is honest but not spectacular โ which is why the community nearly universally recommends it as the first transmutation to level.
Stasis: The Specialist Answer
Stasis locks enemies in place โ and the game built an achievement around proving you know it: Statue of Insanity, for fully locking a Remnant of the Iron Regiment. Where burn is pressure, Stasis is control: the longest, most dangerous wind-ups in the game (Remnants, heavies, certain boss phases) become free posture windows while the lock holds. One Stasis tool in the loadout is the community's insurance policy for the late campaign.
How Transmutations Change Boss Fights
The boss hub's universal loop โ parry, break, execute โ does not change when you bring transmutations; the windows just get longer. Burn pressure ticks during the repositioning phases, Stasis converts the scariest wind-up into the safest damage of the fight, and both let a patient player set the pace instead of borrowing it. Bring one of each philosophy and the roster has no unwelcome question.
