Shambling Civilians Character Guide

Type: Infantry

Threat: Low

What Shambling Civilians Are

The plague does not spare non-combatants. Shambling Civilians are risen villagers fighting with whatever they could pick up — farm tools, torches, broken furniture — and they are the first enemies most players meet outside the tutorial. They attack alone or in loose pairs, wind up slowly, and punish only the truly greedy. Official footage shows torch-carriers among them, so expect the occasional burning swing.

How to Fight Them

Treat them as movement practice for the posture system: a single parry fills a large chunk of their stagger bar, and one critical finisher removes them. Do not spend Ferro Flask charges on these fights — every wound they deal is a parry you failed to read. If you are practicing the ten-parry streak for the Symphony of Steel achievement, thin crowds of Civilians are the safest place to build it.

Do not let a torch carrier swing into a group of its friends — burning hits interrupt your rhythm even when the damage is trivial. Pull one at a time.

Why They Matter

Civilians exist to teach the core loop of Valor Mortis combat: read, parry, stagger, execute. Every elite enemy in the game speaks this same language at a higher difficulty, so the habits you build here — watching wind-ups, not swinging twice — are the ones that carry you to the Eternal Guard.
